Pomona, Los Angeles County – A student from Montclair High School is in critical condition after being struck by a speeding vehicle in Pomona over the weekend.
“It’s heartbreaking to see him like this,” said Brian Ortiz, Brandon Bustillo’s cousin. “He didn’t deserve what happened.”
Sixteen-year-old Brandon Bustillo was crossing Phillips Boulevard Saturday night after attending a quinceañera when he was hit. His father, Franklin Bustillo, witnessed the terrifying moment the driver sped off, leaving Brandon lying in the street. He is now hospitalized in an intensive care unit, suffering from severe head injuries and currently in a coma.
At the time of the incident, Brandon was accompanied by his friend and brother. They said they had checked both directions before crossing, but the vehicle approached so quickly that they barely had time to react.
“The car almost hit my leg too,” recalled his brother, Pedro Bustillo. “I turned and yelled to Brandon to watch out.”
Friends were visibly emotional as they learned about the accident.
“He’s got all of us supporting him, and I hope he can feel that,” said Damon Carreno, one of Brandon’s close friends.
Pomona police continue to investigate the case and are reviewing evidence to track down the driver. Meanwhile, Brandon’s family is pleading with the public to come forward with any information that could help.
“At the end of the day, we just want justice for him,” said Cassandra Ortiz, another cousin.

¿Can You Get Compensation If You Were Hit by a Car in a Hit-And-Run?
You can obtain compensation if you were injured in a hit-and-run as a pedestrian in California—even if the driver is never identified—though the process depends on several factors:
1. Uninsured Motorist (UM) Coverage
If you or a family member in your household has auto insurance with uninsured motorist (UM) coverage, you can file a claim through that policy. UM coverage typically applies to hit-and-run accidents, including when you’re a pedestrian.
2. Victim Compensation Program
California offers the Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB), which helps victims of violent crimes (including hit-and-runs) pay for medical bills, therapy, and lost wages. This isn’t a lawsuit but a state-run program to help victims.
3. Civil Lawsuit (if driver is identified)
If police later identify the suspect, you can:
- Sue them directly for damages (medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, etc.).
- Pursue a criminal restitution order if charges are filed.
4. Health Insurance + Liens
If no UM coverage is available and the driver is not found, your health insurance may cover your treatment. Some hospitals or doctors may file a medical lien, expecting payment from a future settlement if the driver is later found.Hiring hit and run accident attorneys can make a great difference when you seek compensation and justice.
