What Can I Do Right After Being Struck by a Car as a Pedestrian?
Getting hit by a vehicle while walking can be a traumatic and overwhelming experience. In the moments following a pedestrian accident, it’s important to take specific steps to protect your health, your legal rights, and your ability to seek compensation.
1. Seek Medical Attention Immediately
Your health comes first. Even if you think your injuries are minor, get checked by a medical professional. Some injuries may not show symptoms right away but could worsen over time.
2. Call 911 and Report the Accident
If you’re physically able, call 911 or ask someone nearby to do so. Police will create an official accident report, which can be crucial for your legal case.
3. Collect Evidence at the Scene
If possible, gather contact information from the driver, witnesses, and take photos or video of the scene, your injuries, and any damage. This documentation can support your claim later.
4. Don’t Admit Fault
Be honest when talking to the police, but avoid making any statements that could be interpreted as admitting blame. Liability can be complex in pedestrian accident cases.
5. Speak to a Lawyer Before Talking to Insurance
