[06-05-2025] Los Angeles, CA – Amanda Castillo Identified as Victim in Fatal Crash on I-5 Freeway

Sylmar, California – A woman who died in a fiery crash on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Sylmar has been identified as 35-year-old Amanda Castillo, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. A second occupant who also died in the crash has not yet been named.

The collision occurred at approximately 10:41 p.m. on May 29, when California Highway Patrol officers were called to the northbound lanes of the freeway just south of Roxford Street, CHP Officer Carlos Lopez reported.

Investigators determined that a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee had slammed into the rear of a semi-truck’s trailer and caught fire. The vehicle’s airbags deployed upon impact.

Fire crews quickly responded and extinguished the blaze, but both Castillo and the other person in the Jeep were pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-truck sustained major damage, though the driver was unharmed, according to officials at the scene.

A SigAlert was issued, closing three lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway for several hours while authorities investigated the crash.

“This was a heartbreaking incident that took two lives,” said CHP Capt. E.A. Krusey. “Our condolences go out to the victims’ families. We are continuing to look into the details of this tragic event to determine the exact cause.”
