San Bernardino, California – A woman died and another sustained injuries following a dog mauling near a park in San Bernardino on Thursday, July 31, according to police.
Officers were dispatched around 5 p.m. to the area of Pacific Street and Perris Hill Park Road, near Perris Hill Park, after receiving reports of a dog attack, said Capt. Nelson Carrington of the San Bernardino Police Department.
The incident occurred near a homeless encampment, he added.
While assisting a woman who had been bitten, an officer was confronted by two aggressive dogs—believed to be pit bulls or pit bull mixes—which charged at him and the victim. The officer opened fire, fatally shooting one of the dogs, Carrington said.
Roughly 30 yards from the initial scene, officers discovered a second woman suffering from critical injuries consistent with a dog mauling. She was transported to a hospital, where she later passed away.
The other woman was also hospitalized; her condition has not been confirmed. Authorities have not yet released the identities of either victim.
San Bernardino Animal Control responded to the scene and removed 14 dogs from the area as part of an ongoing investigation.
No additional information was immediately provided.

Who Can File a Claim When Someone Dies in a Dog Attack at a Public Location?
When a loved one dies due to a dog attack in a public place, certain surviving family members have the legal right to file a wrongful death claim in California. Typically, the individuals who can pursue compensation include:
- The victim’s spouse or domestic partner
- Children or legally adopted children
- Parents or other dependents, in some cases
California law holds dog owners strictly liable when their pets cause harm in public spaces, such as parks, sidewalks, or other areas where victims are lawfully present. Even if the dog had no prior history of aggression, the owner can still be held responsible for the attack.
Working with experienced wrongful death attorneys is essential to navigate the legal process, especially in cases involving severe or fatal dog bites. California dog bite lawyers can help gather evidence, identify liable parties, and secure financial compensation for funeral costs, medical bills, lost income, and emotional suffering.
