Los Angeles, California – A fatal crash shut down most southbound lanes of the San Diego (405) Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass on Monday afternoon after a person was struck and killed while standing outside a vehicle on the shoulder.
The California Highway Patrol reported the incident occurred around 1:55 p.m. near Sepulveda Boulevard. Investigators said the victim, who has not been identified, appeared to have been outside of a stopped vehicle on the right side of the freeway when they were hit.
Video from the scene showed a covered body lying on the roadway next to a vehicle, with a gas can visible near the car. A flatbed truck, believed to be the vehicle that struck the individual, was stopped a short distance away.
According to KTLA5, the truck driver was given a field sobriety test at the scene and was later taken into custody.
Authorities closed all southbound lanes except the carpool lane while the crash was investigated, causing major traffic backups during the afternoon commute.
