Fullerton, California – A man pushing a wheelchair was struck and killed Sunday evening in a Fullerton crosswalk, authorities said.
The collision occurred around 6:40 p.m. at South Gilbert Street and West Orangethorpe Avenue. According to Fullerton Police Department spokeswoman Kristi Wells, the victim was walking northbound in a marked crosswalk on the west side of the intersection when a white Toyota Prius turning westbound from Gilbert onto Orangethorpe hit him.
Fire Department personnel provided medical assistance and rushed the man to a nearby hospital. “Sadly, his condition later declined, and he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff,” Wells said.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have played a role in the crash. It has not yet been determined whether the pedestrian crossed against a “don’t walk” signal.
