Oceanside, California – A 52-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by an SUV during a nighttime ride near Oceanside Harbor late Saturday, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

The fatal collision occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. in the 300 block of South Harbor Drive. Police spokeswoman Gina Avalos reported that the impact left the cyclist with severe head injuries and a compound fracture of the thighbone.

Paramedics airlifted the man to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The SUV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Avalos said. Early findings indicate that alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors in the crash. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending family notification.
