Sherman Oaks, California – Loose concrete on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway triggered a minor crash and hours-long traffic delays early Wednesday as Caltrans crews rushed to conduct emergency repairs, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol received reports of the initial crash around 4:35 a.m. just north of the Hollywood (101) Freeway. No injuries were reported, but the broken concrete that struck the involved vehicle created large gaps across the two right lanes, forcing crews to immediately shut them down.
By 7:30 a.m., the closures had created a major morning bottleneck, with traffic crawling for nearly five miles back to Nordhoff Street in North Hills.
It was not yet known what caused the concrete to come loose, according to CHP officers. Officials also said it was unclear how long the emergency repairs would take to complete.
Can You File a Claim if Loose Concrete Damages Your Vehicle?
Yes — in many cases, you can pursue compensation if loose or broken concrete on a California roadway damages your vehicle. When roadway defects are caused by poor maintenance, delayed repairs, or hazardous conditions that should have been addressed by state or local agencies, you may have grounds to file a property damage claim. An experienced team of car accident lawyers in California can help determine whether a government entity, contractor, or another party failed to keep the road reasonably safe.
Under California law, public agencies have a duty to repair dangerous conditions within a reasonable time once they know — or should have known — about them. If loose concrete caused a collision or vehicle damage because those responsible did not correct the issue promptly, you may be able to file a claim for repair costs, towing, rental car expenses, and other losses. A qualified Los Angeles car accident attorney can guide you through the process and ensure your claim is filed properly and within the strict timelines required for government-related cases.
If injuries occur along with vehicle damage, full compensation may extend beyond property losses, and having a skilled legal team becomes even more important.
