What to Do if a Pedestrian Dies in a Hit-and-Run Accident in California

Losing a loved one in a pedestrian hit-and-run accident is a devastating experience — and when the driver flees the scene, it only adds to the pain and uncertainty. If you’re facing this tragedy, you may be entitled to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. Here’s what you need to know and how to take the next steps.

1. Report the Incident and Cooperate with Authorities

Immediately notify law enforcement and ensure a police report is filed. The Los Angeles Police Department and other local agencies will investigate the accident, especially in fatal hit-and-run cases.

2. Gather Evidence and Witness Statements

If possible, collect any available evidence, such as surveillance footage, vehicle descriptions, or witness testimony. This information can help identify the at-fault driver and support your claim.

3. Contact Experienced Wrongful Death Attorneys

You should speak with experienced wrongful death attorneys who understand California’s complex personal injury and fatal accident laws. They can guide you through the legal process and help file a civil claim on behalf of the deceased’s family.

4. Work with Hit and Run Accident Attorneys

Fatal hit-and-run crashes require attorneys who specialize in these types of cases. Hit and run accident attorneys can assist with identifying uninsured motorist coverage or alternative compensation options if the driver is not found.

5. Pursue a Pedestrian Accident Claim

Even if the driver is never identified, your attorney may still be able to pursue a claim under your loved one’s or your family’s insurance. A team of skilled pedestrian accident attorneys can explore every available option to seek justice and financial relief.

6. Seek Local Representation in Los Angeles

If the accident occurred in the Los Angeles area, working with a Los Angeles car accident attorney who understands local laws and courts can make a significant difference in the outcome of your case.
