San Marcos, California – San Marcos was the scene of a serious DUI-related collision on Wednesday afternoon when a Nissan minivan and a Lexus sedan struck each other head-on at a neighborhood intersection.

The crash occurred around 3:23 p.m. at Cox Road and Mulberry Drive, leaving the Lexus driver, a 22-year-old man, with life-threatening injuries. He was transported immediately to a nearby hospital.

The Nissan’s driver, identified as 42-year-old Manuel Villanueva, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Villanueva was later taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence and reckless driving.

Investigators said the incident began when Villanueva attempted to overtake another vehicle, sideswiped it, and then crashed head-on into the Lexus.

Bystanders described the frightening sequence of events, helping authorities piece together what unfolded.

Deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station Traffic Unit responded to the crash site and are leading the ongoing investigation. Officials are asking additional witnesses to step forward with any information that may assist in clarifying the circumstances.

The aftermath forced the closure of the intersection for several hours as crews worked on cleanup and conducted preliminary inquiries.

How to Claim Compensation After a DUI Head-On Accident

A head-on collision is among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents, and the risks are even higher when alcohol or drugs are involved. If you or a loved one has been injured in a head-on crash caused by a drunk driver in California, it’s important to understand your legal rights and the steps to claim compensation.

Why DUI Head-On Collisions Are So Severe

Head-on crashes often occur at high speeds and result in catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, and internal bleeding. When a driver is impaired by alcohol or drugs, their reaction time, coordination, and judgment are compromised, making these accidents more likely and more devastating.

Compensation Available for Victims

If you were injured in a DUI head-on accident, you may be entitled to recover damages for:

  • Medical expenses (emergency care, surgery, rehabilitation, and long-term treatment)
  • Lost wages and loss of future earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering and emotional distress
  • Property damage
  • Punitive damages (in some DUI cases, courts award these to punish reckless conduct)

Working with experienced DUI accident attorneys ensures that all potential damages are considered and aggressively pursued.

Steps to Take After a DUI Head-On Crash

  1. Seek immediate medical attention – Your health and safety are the priority.
  2. Report the accident to the police – A police report will document evidence of DUI and fault.
  3. Gather evidence – Take photos, collect witness information, and keep all medical records.
  4. Contact an attorney – Skilled head-on collision attorneys can guide you through the process and deal with the insurance companies.
