Burbank, California – A suspected drunk driver traveling the wrong way on the Golden State (5) Freeway was killed early Sunday morning after colliding with multiple vehicles in Burbank, authorities said.
The crash was reported around 3:45 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway near Alameda Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed the fatality at 3:57 a.m.
Investigators said a vehicle traveling northbound in the number one lane struck a wrong-way driver heading southbound. A third vehicle then crashed into the first vehicle, causing it to overturn and land on its roof.
“All vehicles remained at the scene,” CHP Officer Shanelle Phillips said. “Party #1 (the wrong-way motorist) was later located within vehicle #1 deceased. Alcohol is considered to be a factor in this crash.”
A SigAlert was issued at 4:28 a.m., shutting down all northbound lanes at Alameda Avenue. The lanes were reopened shortly before 9 a.m.
No other injuries were immediately reported, and the identity of the deceased driver is pending confirmation by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
