Lancaster, California – A suspected DUI collision in Lancaster left a 9-year-old boy dead and a teenage girl critically injured, leading to the arrest of a Victorville man, authorities reported.
The deadly crash happened around 5:45 p.m. on July 30, 2025, along 200th Street East, just south of Avenue G, according to a written release from the California Highway Patrol’s Antelope Valley Area office.
CHP officials say 23-year-old Christian Powell of Victorville was driving a 2019 Dodge Challenger southbound when he allegedly veered into the opposite lane.
Powell tried to steer away from an oncoming 2025 Honda driven by 19-year-old Aileen Mendoza of Lancaster. Despite efforts from both drivers, the two vehicles collided head-on.
A 9-year-old boy riding in the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. A 14-year-old girl, also in the Honda, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
Authorities said everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt, although proper seatbelt usage is still being reviewed.
Powell was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence.
