Long Beach, California – The man who plunged from a pedestrian bridge overlooking a busy stretch of the Long Beach shoreline did not intend to take his own life, according to a recently released autopsy report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Authorities determined that his November 16 death was accidental. The report indicates that he and a friend had been drinking atop the pedestrian bridge spanning Shoreline Drive, which links the Convention Center plaza to Rainbow Harbor. The two reportedly began daring each other to jump from the bridge’s spiral staircase into the harbor waters below.

Dozens of bystanders—some waiting for afternoon boat tours—watched as 60-year-old Daniel Tholl jumped from the staircase and fell approximately 40 to 50 feet, ultimately landing on a dock.

He hit the water face-forward, and onlookers quickly rushed to help. They pulled him from the water and attempted to administer first aid, but he died at the scene.

Tholl’s friend told investigators that he had shown no signs of suicidal intent and believed the jump was part of their dare. According to the report, Tholl even removed his phone, wallet, and other items from his pockets beforehand so they wouldn’t get wet.

How Long Do You Have to Have to Claim a Pedestrian Accident in Long Beach?

In Long Beach, California, the timeframe to file a pedestrian accident claim depends on the nature of the incident and the parties involved.

Standard Personal Injury Claims

For most pedestrian accidents involving private individuals or entities, California law stipulates a two-year statute of limitations from the date of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. Failing to initiate legal action within this period typically results in the forfeiture of your right to seek compensation.

Claims Involving Government Entities

If your accident involved a government entity—such as a city-operated vehicle or hazardous public infrastructure—you must adhere to a different timeline. In these cases, a formal claim must be filed with the appropriate government agency within six months of the incident. Missing this deadline can bar you from pursuing any compensation.

Wrongful Death Claims

In the unfortunate event that a pedestrian accident results in death, eligible family members have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit. This allows families to seek compensation for their loss and hold responsible parties accountable.

Importance of Prompt Legal Action

Acting swiftly after a pedestrian accident is crucial. Delays can lead to lost or degraded evidence, fading witness memories, and missed legal deadlines. Consulting with experienced legal professionals can help preserve your rights and strengthen your case
