Long Beach, California – An 86-year-old woman lost her life and another motorist sustained injuries following a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon near El Dorado Park in East Long Beach, officials reported Monday.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:07 p.m. at the intersection of Studebaker Road and Los Santos Drive, situated between Stearns Street and Atherton Street, according to Long Beach Police Department Lt. Brandon Deis.
The deceased was identified as Julieta Ayala, a Long Beach resident, by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a preliminary police statement, Ayala had been driving a 2015 Toyota Corolla westbound on Los Santos Drive when she stopped beyond the posted stop sign, placing her vehicle in the path of oncoming traffic on Studebaker Road.
At that moment, a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado—driven by a 45-year-old Long Beach man heading north on Studebaker—collided with the Corolla within the intersection.
The Colorado’s driver remained at the scene, cooperated fully with law enforcement, and was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Investigators do not believe that speed, distraction, or intoxication contributed to the crash, according to the police statement.
Studebaker Road was closed temporarily during the investigation but has since reopened.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact Detective Kevin Johansen of the LBPD Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355.

How to Claim Compensation After a Two-Vehicle Crash With One Dead and One Injured
If you were injured or lost a loved one in a two-vehicle crash in California, you may be entitled to financial compensation. However, the process can be complex—especially when both a fatality and a serious injury are involved. Surviving victims can file a personal injury claim for medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering, while the family of the deceased may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover funeral costs, loss of companionship, and other damages.
Determining liability is key. Insurance companies often dispute who was at fault or try to minimize payouts. That’s why it’s critical to work with experienced California car accident lawyers who can gather evidence, negotiate with insurers, and take your case to court if necessary. This is especially important in cases where multiple parties are involved, or when one driver has died and cannot provide testimony.
If your accident occurred in Los Angeles or surrounding areas, speaking with a trusted Los Angeles car accident attorney can help clarify your legal options and protect your rights from day one.Need help after a serious car accident?
