Pedestrian Accident

Oxnard, Ventura County – A serious pedestrian accident took place Saturday evening at the intersection of Gonzales Road and Oxnard Boulevard in Oxnard.

According to a statement from the Oxnard Police Department, a 60-year-old man from Los Angeles, whose name has not been released, was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street.

Authorities reported that the man, a flower vendor, was outside a marked crosswalk when the collision happened. He was reportedly trying to collect buckets of flowers placed in the median at the time of the incident.

The driver, identified as 22-year-old Harley Means of Oxnard, was operating a 2007 Infiniti M35. After hitting the pedestrian, Means pulled over on the right shoulder and immediately called for help.

Responding officers found the victim lying in the eastbound lanes. He was rushed to Ventura County Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Means stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Following a preliminary review, officials reported that speed, alcohol, and drugs did not appear to be factors in the crash. However, the investigation is still ongoing.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have information to assist. Officer Alexis Arellano can be reached at (805) 385-7749 or by email at alexis.arellano@oxnardpd.org, as mentioned in the department’s statement.

What Can I Do if I Suffer a Pedestrian Accident in California?

If you suffer a pedestrian accident in California, here’s what you should do to protect your health, your rights, and any future claim for compensation:

1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Even if you think your injuries are minor, get checked by a doctor. Some serious injuries (like internal bleeding or brain injuries) aren’t immediately obvious.

2. Call 911 and Report the Accident

Always call the police. An official report will document the incident, which is critical for any insurance claim or lawsuit.

3. Gather Evidence

If you can, at the scene:

  • Take photos of your injuries, the vehicle, traffic signs, and the surrounding area.
  • Get names, phone numbers, and statements from witnesses.
  • Note details like weather, road conditions, and anything unusual.

4. Get the Driver’s Information

Collect the driver’s name, contact details, license plate number, driver’s license information, and insurance company.

5. Do Not Admit Fault

Be polite but avoid saying things like “I didn’t see you” or “It was my fault.” These statements can hurt your case even if you weren’t legally responsible.

6. Contact a Pedestrian Accident Attorney

California law often favors pedestrians, but insurance companies will still try to minimize payouts. A personal injury lawyer can help you:

  • Deal with insurance adjusters.
  • Calculate the full value of your damages (medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, future care).
  • File a lawsuit if necessary.

7. Follow Medical Advice and Document Your Recovery

Keep records of:

  • Medical bills
  • Prescriptions
  • Doctor’s notes
  • Time missed from work
  • How your injuries affect your daily life

8. Be Careful What You Post Online

Insurance companies may use your social media posts against you. It’s best to avoid posting anything related to your accident or your activities. Here’s a video of Alex Megeredchian explaining why:
