Newport Beach, California – A suspect has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision that left a pedestrian seriously injured, the Newport Beach Police Department announced Thursday.

The incident took place around 11:15 p.m. on April 24, at the intersection of 22nd Street and Newport Boulevard, where a vehicle reportedly struck a pedestrian and then fled the scene, according to Sgt. Steve Oberon of the NBPD.

When officers arrived, the vehicle involved had already left. The pedestrian, who sustained significant injuries, was transported by paramedics to a trauma center for emergency treatment.

“Given the critical nature of the victim’s injuries, our Major Accident Investigation Team was activated and began a thorough investigation at the scene,” Oberon said.

After several days of investigative work that extended across multiple counties, authorities located the suspect vehicle on Saturday in Fontana. The car was recovered and brought back to Newport Beach as part of the ongoing case.

On Tuesday, police arrested 21-year-old Samantha Sandoval of Jurupa Valley on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing injury. She was booked into the Newport Beach Police Department Jail.

Officials continue to seek additional information related to the case. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant details is encouraged to contact NBPD at 949-644-3681.

How Can You Obtain Compensation from a Hit and Run?

If you were injured in a hit-and-run as a pedestrian, you may still be able to obtain compensation—even if the driver is never found. California law allows injured pedestrians to pursue claims through various avenues:

  1. Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM/UIM): If you have auto insurance that includes UM/UIM coverage, it can step in to cover your medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering, even though you were on foot.
  2. Victim Compensation Programs: California has a Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB) that may help cover certain losses for hit-and-run victims, including medical bills and therapy.
  3. Identifying the Driver: If law enforcement locates the hit-and-run driver, you may file a personal injury claim or lawsuit against them. In cases where negligence is proven, you can seek full damages including medical costs, emotional distress, and more.
  4. Legal Representation: Working with experienced pedestrian accident attorneys can make a big difference. They can help identify all sources of compensation, handle negotiations with insurers, and file legal action if needed.
