Manhattan Beach, California – The Loyola High School community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of 18-year-old Braun Levi, a standout tennis player who was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver in Manhattan Beach.

Levi, who was just weeks away from graduating, was walking with a friend along Sepulveda Boulevard around 1 a.m. on Sunday when he was hit, according to Manhattan Beach police.

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Jenia Belt, has been arrested and may face DUI and murder charges.

On Sunday evening, hundreds gathered at Loyola High School for a tearful candlelight vigil, where classmates, teachers, and family members honored Levi’s memory and leaned on one another for support.

“Braun was more than just a friend—he was an inspiration,” said Assistant Principal Paul Jordan. “He brought light to everyone around him. He cherished his family, his school, his Palisades roots, and every one of you—his fellow Cubs.”

Levi’s death comes shortly after he earned a national tennis ranking and added another victory to his record.

He is survived by his parents and older sister.

During the vigil, one friend offered a heartfelt prayer: “May Braun’s passion for life, his kindness, and his joy remind us to cherish each moment and love without hesitation.”

How to Claim Compensation When Someone Dies in a Pedestrian Accident

Losing a loved one in a pedestrian accident is a heartbreaking and life-altering experience—especially when the accident is caused by a drunk or reckless driver. While no amount of money can replace a life, pursuing compensation through a wrongful death claim can help cover funeral costs, loss of financial support, and provide a sense of justice.

Who Can File a Claim?

In California, immediate family members such as spouses, children, or parents of the deceased typically have the legal standing to file a wrongful death claim. In some cases, others who were financially dependent on the victim may also be eligible.

When DUI or Negligence Is Involved

If the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the case may involve criminal charges as well as civil liability. In such cases, working with experienced DUI accident attorneys is essential. They can help gather evidence, represent you in negotiations, and fight for the maximum compensation you’re entitled to under California law.

Building a Strong Pedestrian Accident Case

To successfully claim compensation, it must be proven that the driver acted negligently or recklessly. This can involve:

  • Police reports and toxicology results
  • Eyewitness testimonies
  • Surveillance footage
  • Expert testimony to assess financial and emotional losses

Having skilled pedestrian accident attorneys by your side increases the likelihood of a successful outcome, especially when going up against insurance companies looking to minimize payouts.

What Damages Can Be Recovered?

Survivors may be eligible to recover compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Loss of future income and benefits
  • Emotional suffering and loss of companionship
  • Medical bills related to the incident
