Studio City, California – A deadly crash on the 101 Freeway in Studio City early Tuesday claimed the life of an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, identified as 31-year-old Marcos Peña Jr., along with one other person.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred near the junction of the 170 and 134 freeways around Tujunga Avenue. Peña was riding in a ride-share vehicle that became involved in a multi-vehicle crash involving a Kia sedan, a Kia SUV, and a box truck.
CHP officials stated that the black Kia SUV had stopped in active lanes before its two occupants exited the vehicle. Moments later, a box truck struck the SUV and the two individuals who had stepped out. Both victims, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet confirmed why the SUV had stopped on the freeway.
In a statement released later that day, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Peña’s identity and noted that he had been assigned to Men’s Central Jail since joining the department in July 2022.
“We are devastated by the tragic and premature loss of Deputy Peña, who was taken from us far too soon,” said Sheriff Robert G. Luna. “Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones and colleagues.”
