Bicycle Accident in Cathedral City

Cathedral City, California – Authorities announced Monday the arrest of a 22-year-old man from Desert Hot Springs who allegedly struck a bicyclist with his vehicle and fled the scene in Cathedral City.

Miguel Angel Romero Vallejo was taken into custody on Sunday and booked at the Benoit Detention Center in Indio. He is suspected of committing a hit-and-run that caused injuries, and his bail was set at $25,000.

According to Sgt. Rudy Castro of the Cathedral City Police Department, officers responded to several 911 calls around 2:40 p.m. Sunday reporting that a bicyclist had been hit by a car on Date Palm Drive, just north of Perez Road.

Police arrived at the scene and located the injured cyclist, identified only as a Cathedral City resident. The victim was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of various injuries. His condition was listed as stable, though the full extent of his injuries was not immediately clear.

Investigators believe the man was riding north in the designated bike lane on Date Palm Drive when he was struck from behind by a vehicle.

“The car stopped after the crash, but the driver ran away on foot,” said Sgt. Castro.

Officers located Vallejo approximately 10 minutes later, walking along a sidewalk about a mile from the crash site. He later gave a statement to police.

Anyone with further details about the incident is encouraged to reach out to Sgt. Daniel Anes at 760-202-2476 or via email at Danes@cathedralcity.gov.

How to Seek Compensation After Being Hit by a Car on a Bike

Being struck by a vehicle while riding your bicycle can leave you facing serious injuries, medical bills, and emotional trauma. Fortunately, California law gives injured cyclists the right to pursue compensation for their losses. Knowing what steps to take immediately after an accident can protect your legal rights and strengthen your claim.

1. Prioritize Your Safety and Get Medical Attention

Your health is the top priority. Call 911 or seek emergency medical care right away, even if your injuries seem minor at first. Adrenaline can mask pain, and some injuries may not be obvious until hours or days later. Medical records will also serve as key evidence in your claim.

2. Call the Police and File a Report

Make sure law enforcement comes to the scene and files an official police report. Provide accurate details about what happened but avoid speculating or accepting blame. The report will document important facts such as the driver’s information, witness statements, and the officer’s initial findings.

3. Gather Evidence

If you’re physically able, take photos of the accident scene, your bike, visible injuries, road conditions, and the vehicle involved. Ask for the names and contact details of any witnesses. This evidence can be crucial in proving fault and supporting your compensation claim.

4. Avoid Discussing the Accident with Insurers

Insurance adjusters may contact you soon after the crash. Be cautious about what you say and avoid accepting a quick settlement. These early offers often undervalue the true cost of your injuries and damages.

5. Contact a Personal Injury Lawyer

To ensure your rights are protected and to maximize your compensation, speak with experienced bicycle accident attorneys. A knowledgeable legal team can investigate the accident, gather evidence, and negotiate on your behalf.

If your accident occurred in the Inland Empire, Riverside car accident attorneys can provide local expertise and a strong understanding of regional courts and insurance practices.

What Compensation Can You Recover?

Depending on the details of your case, you may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses (past and future)
  • Lost wages and reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Property damage (bike repair or replacement)
