Natomas, California – The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has identified the pedestrian killed in Wednesday’s vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision in Natomas as 19-year-old Ricky Ray Reyes of North Highlands.
Sacramento City Councilmember Lisa Kaplan wrote on X that Reyes had been waiting for the bus when the crash occurred.
“Please don’t drink and drive. A precious young man lost his life just waiting for the bus. A family is devastated, and no one should have to experience this,” Kaplan posted.
A GoFundMe page created for funeral expenses describes Reyes, affectionately known as “Reray,” as a devoted son, grandson, cousin, and sibling to four sisters and two brothers. Loved ones remembered him as honest, kind, and generous.
According to the fundraiser, Reyes participated in JROTC during school, volunteered his weekends at the Army National Guard Base in Sacramento, and had aspirations of serving his country. At the time of his death, he was exploring a career in HVAC after a tour of UTI College in Natomas. He also worked at Corti Brothers, where he was proud to prepare deli sandwiches for the community and form lasting connections with customers.
Tragically, Reyes’ life was cut short just eight days before his 20th birthday when he was struck by a suspected drunk driver at a bus stop. “His loss has left a deep void in the lives of those who loved him,” the family wrote, adding that they are now facing the difficult task of arranging his funeral while coping with immense grief. The fundraiser asks for support through donations, sharing his story, and keeping the family in thoughts and prayers.
The Sacramento Police Department reported that the crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. near Del Paso and El Centro Roads. Officers arrived to find Reyes in the roadway and began life-saving efforts. The driver, who showed signs of intoxication, was arrested and remains hospitalized.
Police are asking anyone with information about the collision to contact the department’s dispatch center at 916-808-5471.
