Los Angeles, California – A 61-year-old man fatally struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene has been identified by county officials as Celestino Mateo.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the crash occurred around 1:20 a.m. Monday, when what officers described as “a possible silver Chevrolet Tahoe” SUV heading southbound on San Pedro Street at a high rate of speed struck Mateo as he crossed eastbound on 95th Street.
Police said the driver continued south on San Pedro Street without stopping to provide aid.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded shortly after and pronounced Mateo dead at the scene.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the deadly hit-and-run to contact the LAPD South Traffic Division at 323-421-2577. After hours or on weekends, tips may be directed to 877-527-3247.
