Orange, California – An investigation is ongoing in Orange after a pedestrian was fatally struck by an Orange County Sheriff’s Department vehicle late Wednesday night, according to authorities.
The incident took place near the intersection of East Chapman Avenue and Prospect Street at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27.
Officials reported that the pedestrian was attempting to cross Chapman Avenue outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a sheriff’s vehicle driven by a deputy traveling westbound.
Witnesses immediately called 911, and Orange Fire Department crews responded to the scene. Paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the location.
Investigators confirmed that at the time of the collision, the deputy was on duty but was not answering a call for service, nor was he engaged in a pursuit, and no emergency lights or sirens were activated. The deputy remained at the scene and received treatment for minor injuries.
Westbound lanes of Chapman Avenue were shut down overnight while authorities conducted their investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The Orange Police Department is leading the case.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
