Long Beach, California – Police in Long Beach are asking for the public’s help in locating the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian last month.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on August 15, near the intersection of 31st Street and Atlantic Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
When officers arrived, Long Beach Fire Department personnel were already treating a man who had been critically injured. He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries two days later. Authorities said the victim was a Long Beach resident, though his name is being withheld pending notification of his family.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a white Chrysler was traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue when it struck the pedestrian. The driver failed to stop and render aid, continuing southbound after the collision, police said.
Detectives were formally notified of the victim’s death on Friday.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the suspect vehicle is urged to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips may be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Can You Claim Compensation for a Pedestrian Killed in a Hit-and-Run?
When a loved one is killed in a pedestrian hit-and-run accident, families are often left with devastating grief, financial burdens, and many unanswered questions. One of the most important concerns is whether it’s possible to claim compensation after such a tragedy. The short answer is yes—California law allows surviving family members to pursue justice and hold the responsible driver accountable, even if the driver initially fled the scene.
Understanding Wrongful Death Claims After a Hit-and-Run
A fatal pedestrian accident often leads to a wrongful death claim. Surviving spouses, children, or dependents may be entitled to compensation for funeral costs, medical expenses, lost financial support, and emotional suffering. Working with experienced wrongful death attorneys ensures that your case is handled with the compassion and expertise it deserves.
How Pedestrian Accident Attorneys Can Help
Proving liability in a hit-and-run can be complex. Skilled pedestrian accident attorneys investigate the crash, gather evidence such as surveillance footage, and work with law enforcement to identify the driver. Even if the at-fault motorist is never found, victims’ families may still have legal options through uninsured motorist coverage or other avenues.
The Role of Hit and Run Accident Attorneys
Specialized hit and run accident attorneys understand the unique challenges these cases present. They know how to fight against insurance company tactics, negotiate settlements, and take cases to trial if necessary to secure fair compensation for families.
Why You Need a Los Angeles Car Accident Attorney
If the hit-and-run occurred in Southern California, a local car accident attorney in Long Beach provides an advantage by being familiar with state laws, local courts, and insurance practices. Having the right advocate by your side is critical to obtaining justice after such a life-changing event.
