Lancaster, California – An 18-year-old from Littlerock was killed Monday evening in a multi-vehicle collision in Lancaster after a suspected DUI driver ran a red light, authorities said.
The fatal crash occurred around 6:50 p.m. near 90th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Investigators determined that a maroon Kia, driven by 47-year-old M. Monroy of Palmdale, was speeding southbound on 90th Street East when it failed to stop at a red light. The Kia entered the intersection and struck a gray Infiniti G35 that was traveling eastbound on Palmdale Boulevard.
The force of the crash caused the Infiniti to lose control and slam into a white Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck that had been stopped at the light. The 18-year-old driver of the Infiniti, whose name has not yet been released pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Monroy sustained serious but unspecified injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was later taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver of the Chevrolet, 69-year-old G. Martinez of Lancaster, was not injured. A female passenger in the pickup suffered minor injuries.
