Griffith Park, California – A multi-vehicle collision involving an overturned semi-trailer caused major disruptions late Tuesday night near Griffith Park, closing all lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway for several hours, authorities said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. on the northbound Sacramento (5) Freeway, just south of the westbound Ventura (134) Freeway connector. The incident involved a jackknifed semi-truck and at least three other vehicles — a black Nissan Pathfinder, a white Toyota Camry, and a black Honda Civic.
CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig told City News Service that the semi overturned, spilling fuel across multiple lanes and prompting a hazardous materials response. Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the scene to assist several victims, taking at least one person to a hospital in an unknown condition. Others were treated at the scene.
Traffic from the northbound 5 was diverted onto the 134 Freeway as Caltrans crews worked overnight to contain and clean the fuel spill. All lanes were closed until shortly after 5 a.m., according to NBC 4.
