Newhall, California – Authorities have identified the man killed in a violent crash late Saturday night on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway near Newhall as Bulmaro Alvarez Chavez, 60.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 11:10 p.m. just north of Templin Highway and involved at least two vehicles. One of the vehicles reportedly veered off the freeway, went down an embankment, and overturned onto its roof.
CHP Officer Sergio Garcia told City News Service that Alvarez Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed he died from multiple blunt traumatic injuries. His city of residence was not immediately available.
A SigAlert was issued at 11:36 p.m., shutting down lanes on the northbound 5 Freeway through the crash area. The alert remained in place for several hours and was lifted at approximately 4:45 a.m. Sunday as crews cleared the wreckage and reopened traffic lanes.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
