Woman Struck by Vehicle in Long Beach

Long Beach, California – A woman was fatally struck by a vehicle Thursday morning in Long Beach and later pronounced dead at a hospital, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 6:20 a.m. at the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Rose Avenue. Long Beach Police Department officers responded to the scene and found the woman lying in the roadway. Officers attempted lifesaving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

According to preliminary findings, a 2022 Honda Accord was traveling westbound on East Anaheim Street when it struck the pedestrian as she attempted to cross the roadway in an unmarked crosswalk. Police said speed, impairment, and distracted driving do not appear to have been factors in the collision. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The victim’s identity was withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Detective Edwin Parades of the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7110. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through LA Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.

What Damages Are Available When a Pedestrian Dies After Being Hospitalized?

When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, survives the initial impact, and later dies from accident-related injuries, California law allows certain family members and the victim’s estate to pursue compensation through wrongful death and survival claims. These claims are intended to address both the financial and personal losses caused by the fatal incident.

Medical Expenses Before Death

If the pedestrian was hospitalized prior to passing away, recoverable damages may include emergency treatment, surgeries, intensive care, medication, rehabilitation, and any other medical services directly related to the injuries. These costs remain recoverable even if death occurred days or weeks after the accident.

Funeral and Burial Costs

Reasonable funeral, burial, or cremation expenses may be recovered by surviving family members. These costs are commonly included in wrongful death claims and are supported through invoices and receipts.

Loss of Financial Support

Eligible relatives—such as spouses, domestic partners, or children—may seek compensation for the income and financial contributions the pedestrian would have provided over their lifetime. This includes lost wages, benefits, and future earning capacity.

Loss of Companionship and Emotional Support

California law also allows recovery for non-economic damages. Families may be compensated for the loss of love, companionship, care, guidance, and emotional support the pedestrian would have provided.

Pain and Suffering Before Death (Survival Action)

In addition to a wrongful death claim, the victim’s estate may pursue a survival action for damages suffered between the time of injury and death. This may include the pedestrian’s conscious pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other losses experienced prior to passing away.

Who May Be Held Liable

Liability may extend beyond the driver, depending on the facts of the case. Claims may involve negligent motorists, commercial vehicle operators, or other responsible parties. In incidents involving cyclists or shared roadway hazards, families may also work with experienced pedestrian accident lawyers in California when unsafe driving affects multiple road users. Given the legal complexity of fatal cases, many families rely on a trusted wrongful death attorney California families turn to for guidance—especially in high-traffic areas such as Long Beach, where a knowledgeable car accident attorney in Long Beach can be critical.
