San Diego, California – A 73-year-old cyclist sustained a serious leg injury and was taken to the hospital following a crash involving a vehicle in Point Loma Heights on Thursday, according to authorities.
The San Diego Police Department reported that the collision happened in the 4500 block of Voltaire Street. A 67-year-old driver had come to a full stop in the road before attempting to reverse into his driveway.
As the vehicle turned across the roadway to back in, an eastbound cyclist riding in the marked bike lane did not reduce speed and struck the side of the car, police said.
The cyclist suffered an open fracture to his leg and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical care. No update on his condition has been provided.
SDPD’s Traffic Division is handling the investigation. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was not involved in the incident.
