El Cajon, California – A man is dead and another has been taken into custody after an early Sunday morning hit-and-run crash in El Cajon, officials reported.
The San Diego Police Department stated that the collision happened shortly before 1 a.m. near Chase Avenue and Avocado Avenue. A vehicle struck a fire hydrant and a utility pole, causing a large water spray and snapping the pole. Witnesses said a pedestrian pushing a shopping cart was also hit and appeared to have died at the scene.
Emergency responders from El Cajon Police and Heartland Fire arrived to find an unidentified man with fatal injuries. The driver had already fled.
Detectives used automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology to track a white GMC SUV spotted in the area moments after the crash. The SUV, showing damage and an airbag deployment, was later discovered abandoned on the 500 block of Sandalwood Drive.
Police then found a man at a nearby residence who showed signs of intoxication and admitted to driving the vehicle. He was arrested without resistance, though his name has not been released.
Utility workers were dispatched to fix the damaged water and power systems.
