San Diego, California – San Diego police are looking into a hit-and-run that left a 17-year-old girl injured in Carmel Valley last week.
The collision occurred around 9 p.m. Friday in the parking lot at 3500 Del Mar Heights Road, shortly after the Torrey Pines High School football game.
Security footage from the evening shows the teenager and several friends entering a nearby shopping center, close to the Bank of America. Moments later, a vehicle accelerated and struck the girl.
She was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
“It was frightening and deeply upsetting for the girl who was hit, and of course for her friends who witnessed it. Experiencing something like that is devastating,” said Cliff Thomas, the stepfather of one of the victim’s friends. “We really need anyone who saw what happened to come forward so the driver can be held accountable.”
By Tuesday afternoon, the San Diego Police Department confirmed the case had been referred to the Community and Youth Services Division. The suspect driver remains at large.

What Compensation Is Available for Teenagers Injured in Hit-and-Run Accidents?
When a teenager is injured in a hit-and-run accident, families often wonder whether they can seek compensation—even if the injuries are considered minor. In California, victims of hit-and-run crashes may be entitled to recover damages such as medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, emotional distress, and in some cases, lost future earnings.
Working with experienced hit and run accident attorneys is essential because these cases are often complicated. The driver may not be immediately identified, and families must often rely on their own insurance coverage, including uninsured motorist benefits. Skilled attorneys can investigate the incident, obtain surveillance evidence, and build a strong case for compensation.
If the hit-and-run involved a pedestrian, pedestrian accident attorneys can ensure that all aspects of the victim’s rights are protected. Even minor injuries can have long-term effects, and legal representation ensures that insurance companies do not minimize the claim.
In tragic cases where a hit-and-run results in the death of a young victim, families may pursue justice with the help of wrongful death attorneys. These claims can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and the emotional and financial hardships suffered by surviving loved ones.
Local knowledge is also crucial. For example, if the incident occurred in San Diego, consulting a San Diego car accident attorney ensures the family works with someone familiar with local courts, insurers, and accident patterns in the region.
