Ramona, California – Authorities have identified the woman who died after being struck by a pickup truck while walking with a companion Saturday night in Ramona.
The victim, 35-year-old Ashley Dietze, was hit by a westbound 1997 Toyota T100 as she and a 42-year-old man were crossing a dimly lit section of the 700 block of Main Street shortly before 9:30 p.m., according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.
Dietze died at the scene. Paramedics transported the male pedestrian to Palomar Medical Center with serious injuries, CHP Public Affairs Officer Jasmine Lopez said.
The 19-year-old driver of the pickup and a 17-year-old passenger were not injured, authorities reported.
Investigators have not yet determined whether speed, alcohol, or other factors contributed to the crash. The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
What Damages Can Families Recover After a Pedestrian Wrongful Death?
Losing a loved one in a pedestrian accident is devastating — emotionally, financially, and psychologically. When a negligent driver causes a fatal crash, surviving family members have the right to pursue justice through a wrongful death claim. Working with an experienced wrongful death attorney in California can help you understand the full range of damages available and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Economic Damages
Families may recover compensation for financial losses directly tied to the victim’s death. These may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses, including cremation or memorial services.
- Loss of income and benefits the deceased would have provided.
- Medical costs incurred before the victim’s passing, if emergency care was provided.
- Loss of household services, such as childcare, maintenance, or support the victim contributed.
Non-Economic Damages
The emotional impact of a wrongful death is immeasurable. California law allows families to seek compensation for:
- Loss of companionship, love, and guidance.
- Emotional distress and pain caused by the sudden loss.
- Loss of consortium, in the case of a surviving spouse or partner.
A qualified pedestrian accident lawyer in California can help evaluate your case and present clear evidence to maximize these non-economic damages.
Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim
Under California law, the following individuals typically have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit:
- The spouse or domestic partner of the deceased.
- Children, stepchildren, or dependents.
- In some cases, the personal representative of the estate.
