El Cajon, California – A 70-year-old man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon in a hit-and-run collision in El Cajon, but police quickly arrested the suspected driver thanks to automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology and witness cooperation, authorities said.
According to the El Cajon Police Department, officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to the 400 block of Fletcher Parkway after receiving reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. The victim sustained a severe head injury and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to survive.
Witnesses at the scene provided officers with a detailed description of the vehicle and its license plate number. Using that information and ALPR data, police located and detained the suspect a short time later.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Brian Guevara, allegedly admitted to his involvement in the crash. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.
“This case highlights how technology and strong community partnerships help us solve crimes quickly and keep our streets safer,” said El Cajon Police Chief Jeremiah Larson.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the El Cajon Police Department at (619) 579-3364.
Can I Get Compensation if the Hit-and-Run Driver Was Under 21?
Yes. Even if the hit-and-run driver is under 21, you can still pursue full compensation for your injuries and losses. In California, minors and young adults are still legally responsible for the damages they cause, including medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. If the at-fault driver’s insurance is limited—or if they were uninsured—you may be able to recover compensation through your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage or by filing a civil claim against the driver’s parents or legal guardians.
