Oceanside, California – A 72-year-old bicyclist died Sunday morning after veering to avoid a collision with a 7-year-old child riding a scooter along the San Luis Rey River Trail, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 10:40 a.m. near Mance Buchanon Park as the elderly cyclist attempted to pass the boy on the path. According to Oceanside Police Department Officer Gina Avalos, the child cut in front of the bicyclist, causing the man to swerve abruptly and lose control of his bike.
Despite wearing a helmet, the cyclist suffered a severe head injury. First responders found him unconscious and administered CPR. He was taken to a nearby fire station to await an airlift to a trauma center, but he died before he could be transported, Avalos said.
No additional injuries were reported.
The victim’s name will be released once his family has been notified.
